Love versus lust between two men.

    I thought them men of realjock might benefit from the distinction between love and lust. I certainly have done both. Love is the most important emotion in the world whereas lust is just lust, best performed with no negative judgements about it except some awareness that two men might hurt each other.

    Shakespeare wrote about lust well, in the following sonnet:

Sonnet 129

    The expense of spirit in a waste of shame

    Is lust in action; and till action, lust

    Is perjured, murderous, bloody, full of blame,

    Savage, extreme, rude, cruel, not to trust,

    Enjoy’d no sooner but despised straight,

    Past reason hunted, and no sooner had

    Past reason hated, as a swallow’d bait

    On purpose laid to make the taker mad;

    Mad in pursuit and in possession so;

    Had, having, and in quest to have, extreme;

    A bliss in proof, and proved, a very woe;

    Before, a joy proposed; behind, a dream.

    All this the world well knows; yet none knows well

    To shun the heaven that leads men to this hell.

    Larry Kramer also said it well: “Yes, sex and love were diferent items when he wanted them in one, and yes, having so much sex made having love impossible…..All I see is guys hurting each other and themselves ….And how to say all this to anyone, when no one is listening, no one wants to hear?”

    I strongly suspect many men know this critical distinction. A few, like me, opt for love. I am sad that some men hurt each other while lusting and I only wish that they knew what real love is.

    Again, Shakespeare said what love is:

Sonnet 116

    Let me not to the marriage of true minds

    Admit impediments. Love is not love

    Which alters when it alteration finds,

    Or bends with the remover to remove:

    O no! it is an ever-fixed mark

    That looks on tempests and is never shaken;

    It is the star to every wandering bark,

    Whose worth’s unknown, although his height be taken.

    Love’s not Time’s fool, though rosy lips and cheeks

    Within his bending sickle’s compass come:

    Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,

    But bears it out even to the edge of doom.

    If this be error and upon me proved,

    I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

    Lastly, I want to add that the most fulfilling love is “mature love between two men”, where each man is a whole human being and just wants to be with the other man, not out of neediness, but out of the pure joy of being together.

    to love true sheds no skin but yields the warmth of a hide of two
