To lower iron levels, you can:
- Avoid iron supplements: Iron supplements and multivitamins can increase iron levels.
- Avoid vitamin C supplements: Vitamin C increases iron absorption.
- Avoid alcohol: Alcohol can damage the liver.
- Avoid raw fish and shellfish: Some older research suggests that Vibrio vulnificus, a bacteria found in coastal waters, can infect shellfish and grow best in the body when iron levels are high.
- Eat calcium-rich foods: Calcium can inhibit the absorption of iron. Examples include yogurt, milk, cheese, tofu, and green leafy vegetables.
- Eat non-sourdough, yeast-fermented bread: Non-sourdough, yeast-fermented bread with at least 50% whole grain can help slow the absorption of iron.
- Drink tea and coffee: The tannins in tea and coffee may reduce iron absorption.
- Replace mammal meat with white poultry meat and lean fish: White poultry meat and lean fish meat from cod, plaice, and redfish are better options than mammal meat.
