Left out the fact that the FUEL PUMP is IN THE FUEL TANK, IMMERSED IN GASOLINE!
Gasoline COOLS the fuel pump.

Running low on fuel potentially allows the fuel pump to OVERHEAT.
Do it enough and you destroy that pump.
