Glenn Burke was an exceptional baseball player—a power-hitter who was described by scouts as the next Willie Mays. (He also invented the "high five.") Despite his outstanding athletic abilities, he was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers, and Burke said he believed it was because management suspected his was gay. In 1994, he made public the fact he was gay and HIV positive, and continued to be well-loved by fans after he came out. In 1995, he was one of the first high-profile sports professionals to die of AIDS.
