The Golden Era of Gay Sports

The seventies and eighties were a time of explosive growth for the organization of gay athletic groups, many of which (such as the running club "The Frontrunners," which has chapters world-wide) continue to this day. According to the "Sporting Life" exhibit's guest curator Jim Provenzano, many gay men go into sports at a young age as a way of "proving" they are straight, then stay for the sheer love of it. Provenzano says he feels gay kids are especially inspired by sports celebrities such as Rudy Galindo and Greg Louganis, who keep playing their sport even after coming out as gay and HIV positive.
