The Golden Era of Gay Sports

Another watershed moment in the history of organized gay athletics occurred when Tom Waddell, who was a sixth-place decathlete in the 1968 Olympics and who was proudly out, decided that the community needed a Gay Olympic Games. (It was not called the "Gay and Lesbian Olympic Games" because at the time the term was considered inclusive of both genders.)
He and others spent two years raising money and getting the event organized. But a week before the games were to start, he was told by the United States Olympic Committee that he couldn't use the word "Olympic." So the competition became the Gay Games, which has become a global phenomenon. At the first Games, 1,300 gay athletes participated; at the latest there were 13,000.
