Well then it comes to a jock, I think there are 2 primary points... 1) To make sure the jock serves the "purpose of the purchase", meaning, you are buying it for a reason, for protection. Make sure it meets the requirements from that standpoint.

2) Comfort. I hate a jock that doesn't feel right. It can be difficult to go into a retailer and request to try on jocks. Some guys (not me) would be uncomfortable talking about it to a salesperson (and some salespeople don't have a clue). I'd go into a sports store or fitness store with knowledgeable people. Ask them questions and even ask if they have a sample you can try on. If not, just ask, "what if I hate it" and if you can effect a return. Take into account shrinkage and get input.

Get a swimmer's jock. It's SO much more comfortable and narrower waist band. And it looks great on me.

It had to be a male dog that tore that jock up. He was obviously frustrated. ;-)

I myself prefer the Combat jock you find in some stores in the UK. You likely can find them online. The band is not as wide as some jocks. The straps tend to lay flat and not aggravate the hell out of you either.

I recently bought some jocks from Undergear. They are the most comfy jocks I've ever owned.

I've purchased a number of jocks over the years because I have something of a fetish for jocks. But when it comes down to it, after wearing one for a few hours, most jocks feel uncomfortable. I definitely prefer the swimmer's jocks; 3" waistbands are very uncomfortable after a while. The most comfortable jock I have is from JM. Also, I like the strapless jocks sold by Undergear. It's great not to have those tight straps around your butt. Plus I was surprised to find that they keep your junk in place just find without the straps. But it all depends on what you're looking for. If you're playing football or wrestling, I'd recommend a standard Bike jock with a cup to protect the family jewels!
