Jesus would get rid of all the situations which make people react out of the things that make them react and send the people who actually do premeditate things then commit crimes to prison to get some inner peace, more information about the government and law, and compassion, and dignity, and be brainwashed to be obedient.

Oh Geee - Look at that.

hippie4lyfe posted a thread about PETA!

With a Video too.

How absolutely interesting and original!

He's never done that before.

It's about time we had a thread about PETA to give us something new to talk about!

It's amazing that no one ever thought to do this before!

Thank you so much hippie4lyfe!

Congrats Hippie for continuing to spread the word...

PETA, as controversial as it is, has arguably gained more ground and advanced more animal law than any other animal organization...

Its social marketing campaigns are in a league of their own...

It uses messaging vehicles that resonate with specific niches of society and incites others...which is what good social marketing usually does -- create something that people will talk about (i.e. this thread)...

Not only has PETA led the fight to institute less cruel methods used in the slaughter of animals, its efforts have led to safer food products consumed by humans...

The timing of the "biblical piece" and the fact that we are talking about it is another victory for PETA...

I don't think Jesus would have eaten the beef or pork as depicted in the video...if I'm not mistaken he was raised in the Jewish faith who only could eat lamb or mutton....unleavened bread and wine. They also burned animals (goats, sheep, pigeons, doves, rams) as sacrificial offerings to God.....that's what Jesus would do...he would kill a fatted calf, burn it and offer it up to God, then he would offer himself up to God for our salvation. Hmmm....sounds pretty cruel to me.

Hiker--

Jews can eat beef and regularly do. You are correct that observant Jews will not eat pork, but 90% of us do not consider ourselves observant in that way.

Jesus would eat meat and fish! read the bible.

this lovely picking and choosing of bible verses seems to remind me of evangelicals who consistently point to leveticus 18:22-23 to say that homosexuality is a sin

I always thought whole fasting of meat thing was due to a former Pope assisting his family fishing business by declaring meat unholy to eat on certain days.

trance, there are a bunch of Old Testament laws about not eating different kinds of meat. Since Jesus was a Jew, he avoided a lot of kinds, but he totally prepared fish for people often. I heard it was his specialty.

Alas, Troi's empathic senses can only pick up the blatantly obvious; sarcasm, even that of veniceman, is too subtle.

Correction: the sarcasm in question was on the part of ITJock, not veniceman (I apologize for my confusion).

Trance--

I heard something similar when I was a kid and the Catholics still couldn't eat meat on Fridays...they said it was because there had been a meat shortage like 500 years ago so the Pope at that time declared Fridays meatless...the point was to teach us that a lot of these so-called holy rules weren't holy at all but based on some historical anomaly or other. That's why they ditched the rule in 1964 (when I was in the second grade) and I was glad not to have to eat those crappy fishsticks for lunch anymore.

Well the bible certainly has no ethical problems with meat eating. The bible also is against homosexuality. People can try to take verses to make it seem like the bible is one thing or another.

This video again I did not make but takes verses and takes what Jesus said to make people think twice. I am not saying Jesus was a vegetarian. He definitely was not. I'll tell you one thing, based on his philosophies Jesus would most certainly be against factory farms. They are hell on earth for animals.

The bible has many verses with regards to fair treatment of animals. Not to cause pain to them, etc. So while Jesus is not on this thread to defend himself I think it is fair to say Jesus would likely be very disturbed by modern day factory farming practices.

ps. thanks veniceman, you rock!

philibuster,

That was back in the day when we actually had demons to worry about. Get into the moment, we are only using Jesus as an analogy to come up with ideas to better the world as it stands today. Kind of like bringing him back.

...like conservative fundamentalist Republicans have a monopoly on using biblical verses to advance their political agenda?

again, the timing and vehicle for the "message" is a winner, regardless of what one's opinion is on eating flesh...

as for "what would Jesus do"...I don't care, I'm only concerned with my own actions and those I'm responsible for...

Hippie is bringing attention to "factory farming," a modern day practice that strong-armed family farms out of the fabric of American culture, and created an excess of food products to feed a fat and ugly American appetite...

The "out of sight/out of mind" mentality keeps us stagnated in denial about many issues, including factory farming...

We are who we are...

Rock on Hippie...

I really enjoy good BBQ'd chicken right off the grill. I marinate it in Texas Pete Buffalo Wing Sauce for at least a couple of hours. So, so good. Thank you Jesus for my BBQ'd chicken and Texas Pete Buffalo Wing Sauce.

I am so blessed to live in a country where chicken comes from "chicken trees" and I don't have to run around in a field and grab one up and twist it's little head off and then pluck the feathers out and gut it before slicing it into neat little pieces for the grill. Thank you Jesus!!
