Are there any openly gay guys in any professional sports? I follow lots of sports (football, soccer, hockey, rugby, surfing, snowboarding) but don't pay any attention to sporting news or hear anything about it. Still taboo to have a gay guy in your locker room?

If you are talking about in the big 4 (Baseball, Football, Basketball, Hockey) then no; but there are many out athletes, several who still compete.

You might find out about some at Outsports:

The times they are a changing though..

Obviously there are a lot of gays in professional sports, but they - like the majority of gay's - prefer to remain 'discreet'.

I really doubt that professional team sports will ever have a out player, if it does it will be someone ready to retire. From college might start on W. coast, maybe CA. The worst would be some scandal that entraps a proff player and makes it look really bad. That is more likely than anything else. Best would be a super star just about to retire that is media savy and in a long term relationship.

I read an article in the Sydney Morning Herald about a study carried out by a gay website. It found that only 10 athletes at the Beijing games were openly gay and only 1 (Matthew Mitcham - Aussie diver) was a guy.

I'm not sure if it was in the same article, but I recall reading somewhere that they believe at least 800 - 1000 athletes at Beijing are gay. I also read that they don't come out as they're afraid coming out will ruin their careers.

The most famous gay guy in a professional sport that I know of would have to be Greg Louganis (retired American diver), but I think he came out after he retired.
