I've come down here for the first time ever. I started in Cherokee and spent the last five days working my way from Cherokee to Asheville. The Blue Ridge Parkway is spectacular and has great trails and I'm only dealing with the portions south of Asheville. The hiking is beautiful and varied and there's lots of other things to see (and I'm here when there's nothing major going on.) I'll be spending tomorrow touring Asheville before I return home on Sat. (Hurricane Hanna permitting.)

Thanks to SouthernGuy and DancerJack for great recommendations and steering me away from the tourist crap!

I haven't left yet and I already can't wait to come back.

The NC mountains are amazing, especially around Asheville. I've worked out there in summers past. I would like to go back sometime and take a trip like that.

I think it was Instinct Mag or one of the travel mags that said Asheville is one of the top 15 places to live in the US. I am going to be applying to their FD when they start accepting applications next month.

I loved NC when I lived at Seymour Johnson AFB, Goldsboro. NC is a great state and if you ever get tired of it you can always just hop on the I-95 and go pretty much anywhere along the east coast.

I loved Asheville when I went hiking there. The view is great and the trails are awesome. Going there in the winter is nice too. You should definately try it sometime.
