Protein powder and upset stomach

Everytime I drink a protein drink (with fat free milk usually), my stomach gets really upset. Is it me or is there something in most protein powders that gives this side effect? Can anyone recommend a brand that's gentle or side-effect free on the stomach? Thanks a lot.

Do you have lactose-intolerance?

This might be the answer. I can't stand a lot of lactose, some - but not a lot. Try a lactose-free protein powder, it worked for me.

If it a question of lactose-intolerance, you might also have to swap out of the fat-free milk.

I remember having a lot of gas until my body got acclimated to processing the extra protein. You might try cutting back on the amount until your body gets accustomed.

FYI: Those new Vivano drinks at Starbucks have 21g of protein; 44g carbs (28g sugars). While not low carb, they are not a bad option after a workout or in a rush. Way better than a venti caramel macchiato with extra whip! I like the chocolate/banana flavor.

Protein shakes always make me gassy. Protein bars also do the same thing. You can get enough protein without a protein drink. Try eating food with a high level of protein.

You can also make your own protein drinks - there are many recipes online. Or you could try lactose-free protein drinks.

Thanks guys.
I don't think it's an allergy to lactose as I've been eating tons of dairy products ever since I am a kid. And if I drink a glass of milk, my stomach doesn't get gassy. Maybe the protein quality is bad (or it comes from artificial flavoring). It's a GNC brand protein so I guess it's no good.

I've always heard to drink a lot of water with protein, though I don't know if that would help your stomach.

Also, I'm surprised a lot of people have never mentioned new whey bullets. They are only 3oz and pack 42 grams of protein. They are DISGUSTING to drink (syrupy), but you get it over in no time!
