In general, I keep hearing good things about Cuba since the original Castro stepped down. It's sad (from a gung-ho American perspective, which isn't necessarily the right perspective) that the little island is seemingly more progressive (or getting) than the USofA and its current stagnancy.

Oh yeah and... AMERICA, FUCK YEAH! Happy 4th! (I hated that movie, btw)

Despite the debacle during their gay pride celebration Cuba is looking remarkably progressive on this bit of human rights. It is going to be really interesting watching that country transition from Castro rule into a new era.

Yeah. Cuba could very well be the model communist state. In a sense that it will actually be communist rather than a thinly veiled totalitarian oligarchies/dictatorships like the other communist countries.

There are good things and bad things about Cuba. My biggest issues are

1) NO FREEDOM OF SPEECH....AT ALL.
2) You aren't allowed to leave the island on vacation or to visit relatives living in other countries.
3) Waiters make more $$ than doctors, as they don't send their tips to the gov't. The doctor is spoke with made......ready for this....$480 A YEAR
4) They do get rations, but it's not enough.

It still has a capitalist underground as people have to make additional money to survive. Illegal hotels (casa particulares), prostitution and the vending of black market cigars, among other things.

The good things about Cuba

1) You can be whatever you want as the government pays for your education.
2) A literacy rate even higher than US's
3) A health care system that is as good as ours, and it's at no cost to the resident.
4) No rent or utilities.
5) Live music in almost every bar, hotel and restaurant as they are paid government employees.
6) No American products are found there, which makes it a mind trip....in a good way.

Interesting...when I clicked on this thread there was a picture of Fidel Castro in the ad space.

Anyways, I think many people tend to think of Cuba as a backwards country, when in fact, given the freedom, I think the people there can progress by leaps and bounds. On human rights issues, I can see them surpassing this country on issues such as gay rights.

It's a terrible thought that one man can take down and supress an entire people. Hopefully these first few baby steps Cuba takes leads them to great things.

this is great news !!! Back in my Grade school and High school years two of my best friends were twins from a full cuban mother, and half cuban father. They were able to leave in about 1956/7 because of the fathers dual citizenship. The mothers side of the family were quite wealthy with a fully operating island style plantation. They lost all of it, and many of their family who were granted a pass to leave under the stipulation that they were to say their goodbyes at the airport and not look back under the penalty of being refused entry to the plane, and that they could not return. I met many of their family on trips in the US, and a trip to Puerto Rico with the twins, during our Freshman year in college, their family told of many a sad story about how they were able to leave Cuba. Does anyone know why the USA continues the embargo against Cuba? Is it really still in large part about the communist Gov's human rights issues? It seems to me that the only harm is to the common citizen of Cuba, and by now that the US would be more inventive than continueing this pointless embargo. Does anyone know what Obama's stand on Cuba is?

We don't embargo Cuba enough, they still get food and medicine from us. That should stop immediately.

I'm surprised anyone there would even want our food or medicine, considering how it is making us sicker here in the good ol' US of A.

Yes, turd burgler is my second favorite expression after fart box. Sometimes I even use them together. Example: That pervert totally wanted to turd burgle my fart box.

uhmmmm, interesting topic....Im cuban, well most of you know that, ive been in Canada for just 11 months so I lived in Cuba for about 21 years. How did I come here?...well my dads canadian...why didnt i do it before? well....when you get a good education 120% free you want to take as much as you can right?

for those thinkin about the other 20%, well is just cause in Cuba they pay you to go to school and you have 3 meals and 2 snacks free every day(its not good but is healthy )

There are a lot of bad things about Cuba, but the most important things which is health care and education are granted. Still its a really poor country and the States will never stop the embargo for the simplest reason ever, they want to take Cuba somehow, they hate what a small country doing whatever they want as a communist society represents for the rest of Latin American countries, they want to avoid the disease to spread all over the continent but so far its not working.....

I love Cuba...why im in canada? Again Cuba is poor, it really is, I wouldnt be fully happy there, so I decided to come after 2 years in University of Havana then finish in Univeristy of Toronto.

The gay thing is actually good, no probs with it, some people might look at you as a freak but seriously its accepted by the government and respected.
