I cant answer it as its alien to me. But why are Kylie, Madonna, Barbara and Liza and Shirley Bassey considered gay Icons?

I just dont see the attraction

BTW just saw Madonna's live performance in England this weekend on the TV and oh my god she still cant sing and she looks embarrassingly awful now!

I am a fan, but I don't quite get the levels of adoration some people go to.

That said, here's my Kylie CD collection:

I dont know if its more disturbing that you have virtualy every album, I noticed a couple of early ones missing, or the fact that you have a photo of them all together ha ha ha

What am I missing?

I bought plastic cd racks that you put on the wall and display the artwork, but you can still open them and get to the cd inside.

its actually more disturbing that you noticed he was missing some, I, on the other hand, didn't realise she had that many

Not a kylie fan, I like a few of her songs but don't listen to them often.

Madonna I like her earlier stuff, when she was tastefully slutty.

Barbara, liza and shirley bassey.. hmm I know of Liza that women with black hair, married a homo or something.. Thats about all I know the other two I have no idea.

So no idea why they are gay icons.

Beats the hell out of me. I've always been more of a metalhead than a dancing queen.

The women are simply [extreme] manifestations of the fun, campy, fabulous inner-feelings of those who iconicize them. They provide entertainment venues that channel such feelings among that crowd, which just happens to be made up of an overwhelming amount of gay men. Even the somewhat gloomy Barbara sang about bittersweet songs about men and being lost in the craze of parties, the ugly duckling who grew up into a swan, issues some gay men relate to. Mariah and Janet have been brought up on this forum many times as well, and similar things can be said about each. It doesn't hurt that these gals are gay-friendly either.

Opinion.

I don't care much about any of them, though I've found one or two of Madonna's records to be beautiful in terms of sound, uniqueness and presentation such as Like a Prayer and Frozen. If I were to iconicize a "diva" for manifesting the extreme end of my emotion spectrum, it would probably be Amy Winehouse

Who is Shirley Bassey ?

OK... time for my confession.

I just love Madonna. I think that her voice has matured so much and I really enjoy seeing her perform.

What has attracted me to her is that fact that she makes people think. She pushes the envelope to the point that the general public has to know why they are offended not just that they are offended. And if they are not thinking, they look ignorant. To me, that is the sign of a true artist.

It's easy for the right-wing to simply call her a whore. But each time she has pushed, it makes many people think. I'm not a fan of judging people. But if you're going to place a judgement, make it on an educated level. Not just because someone said, that the Bible said this....

She fucks with peoples minds and makes them think.

Kyle Mad onna and Lisa Can't sing at all and have no singing voice but they are Show girl's and performers and rely on the Music Background and Hunky Guy's who dance better than they can sing and that's the bottom Line!

Burley Shassey has a voice and is a Diva

Barbra Steisand has a voice also.

ShawnTO, thanks for attempting to educate the masses re:Shirley Bassey. Have you heard her cover of Pink's "Get this Party Started"? I have both her Remixed album and her "Get this party started" album. She was also knighted (or is the term damed?) in England for her contribution to music. SUCH an amazing musician.....obsessed.

There is something incredible about Bassey being as old as she is and looking like she is 30-40ish. She's actually in her 70's. And she still records new music, and actively embraces the dance-remix business, recording custom vocal tracks for "remixes" of her old songs. She lack's Madonna's dance skills, but has a voice to kill.

Kylie's been around since the late 80's. Most of her stuff is usually what's going on in pop music at the time.

Some of my fave's:

Thanks for posting that Bassey video Snowcat, She 's Awesome.. and damn she looks great.

I see no one is commenting on Babs, just because shes a huge bitch now that is totally full of herself doesn't mean you should discount all her early stuff that put her on the map.

I could watch Funny Girl over and over, and she still has an amazing voice ( if you want to pay $1000 per ticket to see her , when she feels like singing)

She had Did It Again or whatever it is actually called.

And nothing else.

As far as pop music goes...well it all kinda blows. Nowadays it's collaborate with Timbaland/Justin Timberlake or fail. There's no originality, each hit song is as contrived as the last, Kylie included.

Don't get be started on pop music.

But as for why they're icons... I think it is too broad a statement to say they are gay icons; I imagine that more people don't view them as icons than those who do.

To be honest, it doesn't make that much sense to me for a straight person to be a gay icon - man or woman.

EDIT: Streisand? Ick.
