In addition to wacking off, you can sign this petition to make Prostate Cancer research a national priority on par with Breast Cancer research.

Let me tell you, there is no good treatment for prostate cancer. No matter whether you choose surgery or radiation, and assuming that you live, the course of therapy and the outcome isn't good.

So help yourself (especially you younger guys) and urge the federal gov't to increase research funds.

http://www.prostatecancerpetition.org/

Fill out the 5 blocks it takes to sign the petition and submit it.

there is this little bit of a hassle...

They will send an email to you to verify YOU signed the petition.

So go to your email and click the verification link. Check your junk mail if you dont see the email within seconds...that's where I found mine.

It's too late for me, but for not you. Save yourselves! ...

Caslon: Hey, what are the comparisons on funding? I'm thinking prostate funding is like 1/3 of breast cancer funding, and the number of diagnoses are similar. Am I close?

If you had clicked the link, you would have seen:

In 2008, there were the same number of new cases of Prostate Cancer (186,320) as Breast Cancer (184,450), as estimated by the American Cancer Society.

In 2007, Breast Cancer received almost two thirds more funding ($127.5 million) from the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program as did Prostate Cancer ($80 million dollars) (59.5% difference).

In 2007, Breast Cancer received more than twice as much funding ($707 million) as did Prostate Cancer ($305 million) from our nation’s medical research agency, the National Institutes of Health (231% difference).

I thought prostate cancer is one of the most treatable forms of cancer (if caught at least fairly early.

I thought it was the methods used for detecting it that were a bit archaic.

NIH is in a bind right now due to the fact that the current administration has sought to restrict the increase of research funding. Consequently, there are many labs around the country that are essentially running out of $$$. Considering that it is even difficult to obtain funding for research (both clinical and laboratory) on "major diseases," it is going to be extremely difficult to influence the NIH to consider a re-allocation of the research funding budget for prostate cancer research.

Ha...with that said...I will still sign the petition.

Best of luck to you Caslon

It is treatable, if caught in time. But that treatment isnt "take two aspirin and call me in the morning." The treatment varies from surgery to radiation, radioactive implants and hormone-blocking therapy. It is not fun anyway you slice it. And in the end, if you live, you are seriously affected.

Here is one mystery. Testosterone feeds the prostate cancer. But the cancer almost always appears in older men. However, testosterone levels are falling in older men. Why doesnt the cancer occur in younger men? Medicine doesnt know what the connection is.

Thank you for your good wishes.

Caslon is very right about how important this is. You really don't need to look very far to see someone who has or had prostate cancer. Caslon fought the battle and now is gracious enough to take an active role to make the rest of us more aware...thank you! My dad has the same and it has spread to other parts of his body and now he's down to 142 pounds (he's 6') and slowly being taken due to what started as prostate cancer. Research and new techniques are so important to coming up with ways of fighting and winning over prostate cancer.

If you haven't signed the petition, you really need to ask yourself "why not". More research could save so many guys!

Thanks Caslon for spearheading this effort! You are my inspiration, keep up the good work and the positive attitude!!

Another exam we should all be getting (I just did) as we are nearing 50 - is a colonoscopy. It is not at all painfull. It is important for guys my age. If you get a clean bill of health, you may not have to have another colon check for 7 years. Colon cancer is treatable when detected early.

I just did that and the psa test too. I only had about a third of the test done and it was NOT comfortable at all. Not really happy with the way they did it but dr said nothing there so should be good to go.

I just done it.

You don't have to be American, or from America to do it.

I put my country (Ireland) for state and zip. It was accepted

So don't let that stop anyone
