Jock and Nerd Combo

I was just wondering if this combination of personalities actually works and is not just something that is cooked up by gay porn and film companies to cater to certain fantasies. I admit I am a nerd and lust after jocks as it were, but was wondering if such a relationship is possible between what is basically two polar opposites.

Are you being serious? Like as if there's such a thing as a single absolute type of guy, and every guy is one or the other.

Of course this can work! There's no such thing as someone that's really a total nerd and someone that's a total jock. And these two things are not polar opposites. Someone who's a super jock can still enjoy watching Star Trek or BSG, and someone who's a total nerd can still enjoy playing 8 different sports in a week, and being a man's man.

It all depends on how you want to define Jock and Nerd. And how much you want to allow your own perceptions to limit your options.

My advice is that during lunch, before everyone goes out for recess, you should visit the "nerd" table and the "jock" table seperately and observe behaviors that might attract the guys at the other table. You might even be able to interview each clique. Just tell them it's for extra credit for social studies class.

Yes, opposites attract.

Some people go to the gym to be a better at a sport.
Other people go to look more like their lvl 68 Orc warrior.

Its really all about a blend of personality and interests. Background is important as well. You can't just call a guy a "jock" and another a "nerd" and ask if it works. Way too many variables including the guys themselves.

Yeah....it's probably better not to ask....

But there are couples where one's more athletically and actively inclined and one's more creatively and eccentrically inclined.

Then there are the guys that are both. They're hot.

i think my soul just died a little, reading this question.

cranial capacity and testosterone are in no way mutually exclusive. the question isn't asking if it's possible to be both a male and female simultaneously, it's more analogous to asking if a person can sing and play piano simultaneously.

both pursuits require a certain degree of neurotics.

subclassing, the parsing of any culture into categories, is never simple; no one personality is easily dissected.

This is totally me, except in my case I'm gearing for my Blood Elf Hunter

I've always been a geek-- gaming, musician (yes, I was a band nerd) and into programming stuff on the side. Then my gay genes kicked in with puberty and I started hitting the gym and learned to dress, though you'd never know from the shirtless pics eh? *lol* Now I love being active, lifting, swimming, etc. So yes its possible to have both in the same personality

Is it possible to have both in a relationship? I'm sure it is. Attraction is unique to every soul. I've got two quarterbacks under my belt, and I'm an honorary Marine by insertion *lol*

But in any case, back to the original topic, opposites definitely attract. I think why it works is that both sides have curiosities about the other.

I definitely fall into the dorkish category first and foremost. I would never actually call myself a jock. I'm not even sure I would use the word athletic. Lifting weights(or at least the desire to over the years) probably was more about the fascination of escaping stereotypes. And baitification.

Once I started working out and eating well, it became more about making my body/mind happier.

Now it's done all those things for me.

Jock and Nerd are just two labels used to try to pigeon-hole people in an easy way.

Very few people are one or the other, most of us are a nice mixture of lots of things.

Reject labels - you're not at high-school anymore guys, and be yourself.

Does the combination work? Absolutely, my partner is much more of a jock in terms of ability then me. I am definitely a nerd, geek, bookworm, whatever you want to call me. To me reading and learning are as important as breathing. I would much rather be reading a book or on the computer then watching TV or playing video games. Even when the hockey playoffs are on, I am reading or on the computer while glancing at the TV every so often.

My partner though is a very coordinated person and picks up different sports very easily. He reads sometimes but rarely anything that he finds too long or "boring". He tried reading "The Economist" but found it threw too much information at him (that is what I love about it, I am an information junkie).

Opposires generally don't attract-- that's a common myth that's been disproven by many studies.
Obviously there are ALWAYS exceptions but anecdotal evidence does not disprove the trend.

A pure jock and pure nerd aren't going to mesh unless it's purely physical. However the disparity of social roles makes for interesting erotic compositions where we can see juvenile role dynamics played out in an adult context.

For real life couples common interests are one of the keys for long term relationships. The only way a jock and nerd would realistically get along is is each was at least a little bit of the other.

I think that the first thing is the definition. If you are more likely to pursue one direction (sports vs. science) over the other then that qualifies you as that identity. This doesn't mean that one precludes the other, but rather, which interest pulls you more in that direction.

I propose these.

Jock: Your boyfriend is telling you something deeply romantic, and your distracted by the play that's going on right now on ESPN which you can see from the corner of your eye.

A jock wants to get better (stronger, faster, etc) at something phyisical (including the mental agility required to accomplish it).

Nerd: Your boyfriend is telling you something deeply romantic, and you realize that either, it's a just a chemical response, or think that this kind of interaction is just what's missing from your favorite RPG.

A nerd wants to solve a technical problem that no one else is even aware of.

If you qualify for either of these, there is a high likelyhood that you will be attracted to the other for the gifts of that identity are the ones that don't come as easily to you and therefor, it make him more attractive to you.

Although to continue the running gag of the thread, athletic fashionistas probably want to look like their Orc Warlock.

Maybe what nerds and jocks share, which leads to so many actually being both, is a tendency for obsessive behavior.

No, I read the thread. I just interpreted it a little differently.

I interpreted the question as "can Jocks really find Nerds attractive."

Most of the people here interpreted the question as "can a jock be a nerd."

Several people here claim to be both nerds and jocks (though personally I don't think guys who play World of Warcraft are automatic nerds - we are "Generation Nintendo" afterall. About 75% of guys between the ages of 16 and 30 own a gaming system of one form or another. It's no longer the sole purview of the geek).

That being said . . .

I think that it is possible for a Jock to be a nerd, but I also think that said Jock/nerd is probably only attracted to other Jocks.

I can't really blame them for that :-P

I think this combo is very feasible, absolutely. There have been a couple of times I've seen a completely hot jock holding hands with his nerdy (yet cute) boyfriend. It certainly is an eye-catcher, especially since the combo can be adorable, especially when the two are affectionately expressive to one another.

One of those couples I've seen out a lot when I've gone into town (the Castro in San Francisco), and I applaud that they're successfully together, even though they remain true to themselves -- the jock being the hunky one, but now noticing the more nerdy guy getting sexily beefy. :-)
