Birth Order: Oldest, Youngest or Middle Child?

If you are not an only child, are you the oldest, youngest or a middle child in the birth order rank of your siblings?

I am the oldest of four. My sister (the only and thus oldest female child) is also gay. My uncle was the youngest. Two friends of mine who are gay were the youngest in their families.

I am not attempting to postulate or prove any theories. Merely curious.

Middle of 3 boys. Isn't something about the order that influences the production of a gay child. I think it is more likely after a mother has one child.

I had a gay great uncle.

I have often noted that I seem a rare gay oldest child. Which is part of why I posed the question. My sister and I were discussing it earlier.

The fraternal birth order effect is the strongest known predictor of sexual orientation; according to various studies, each older brother increases a man's chances of developing a homosexual sexual orientation by from 28% to 48%.[1][2][3][4] Even so, the fraternal birth order effect only accounts for a maximum of one seventh of the prevalence of homosexuality in men.[5] There seems to be no effect on sexual orientation in women, and no effect related to the number of older sisters.

"It is hypothesized that the fraternal birth order effect may be caused by increasing levels of antibodies produced by the mother to the histocompatibility Y-antigen with each son."

Evidently, you really irritated your mother's immune system and got her antibody level right up there the first time.

Ok, ok...she could have just been sensitive and you werent abnormally irritating.

Hmm, perhaps if she knew this, she could stop blaming herself and blame me! Wouldn't that be fun! Of course, then they'd prove it was genetic and she could blame her mother, which would in fact bring existential perfection to her world.

I am the first born son, which in Hispanic culture is about as good as it gets. My parents didnt plan on having any more children, but 11 years later, my sister was conceived.

As the first-born son in Latin culture, I was privileged...I got whatever I wanted, and my parents indulged me and made sure I had the best education, materials, etc. money could buy. (Of course, it was a doubel-edged sword...my parents expected nothing less than perfection from me, and I attempted to deliver as best I could. I'm not trying to brag, but I was accepted at Harvard, Yale, West Point, Annapolis (Naval Academy), and other colleges. I've told my parents that i felt undue pressure to go to an Ivy League school, which is one reasons I accepted West Point over civilian schools.

Youngest of four, two older sisters and one older brother. The mother's release of hormones that "masculinizes" the brain in utero is one of the factors scientists theorize impacts on sexual orientation. Age and stress both seem to impact on this process. For example, German women who were exposed to heavy Allied bombing in WWII seemed to have given birth to a higher number of gay males than otherwise would have been expected.

Here are the four of us on Christmas Day 1966. I am the little squirt on the right.

I find stuff like this interesting as well. In my case it gets very interesting. I am the youngest of two boys. My older brother is also gay. We have a male cousin who is the youngest of two boys and he's gay as well. I have two female cousins who are lesbians. One is the youngest of two females while the other is the middle child and only girl . In other words there is a whole lotta gay going on in my family hahaha. Funny thing is I suspect a few others who are married as well. Interesting twist is that all the gay comes from my mothers side that I'm aware of.

My family is very religious. Pretty close to almost cult like status. They basically fart bible versus or thank God for when they do pass gas because obviously they would have blown up had it not been for the good lord allowing the release :-) I've often wondered if they are running towards christianity out of some self imposed shame.

One more very interesting twist in my life. I was born in a very small town on April 26th. In that nursery I was the only male baby with 6 females. Ironically, 14 yrs later one of those female babies born on the same day but 2 hours earlier than me ended up attending the same private H.S. as me. We struck up a fast friendship via playing sports. This woman throws a baseball harder than most men I know. Yep, she's a dyke.

It's a kick sharring the same birthday as one of your closest friends. Not to mention even more crazy that we were born in the same hospital on that same day and both born gay. We're pretty convinced April 26th is the true birthday of gay pride hahaha!

Like I said, interesting stuff.

Oldest of two boys, oldest of all the grandchildren (11). Just plain oldest.

No other gays in the family tree that I'm aware of...although my sister-in-law's cousin is incredibly gay in a Catholic family that somehow has no idea. It was kinda fun to be in a Catholic wedding where half the groomsmen were gay.

Oldest of two brothers and two sisters.

First brother happens to be two years younger yet is taller, looks and acts as if he's older, more macho, and is already engaged to marry.

I'm the youngest of three children, on my father's side anyway. I have two older half-brothers.

I'm the oldest of 3 kids - a brother who is the middle child and my sister who is the youngest. I've noticed a correlation with twins and being gay - if one is gay there is a high probability that the other twin is gay as well. I know a couple sets of gay twins...

Youngest of five. Two older brothers, two older sisters. I probably was an accident because there's a wide age gap between me and the older four.

It's true. A 1991 study showed that if one were gay, an identical twin was also gay 52% of the time. Fraternal dropped to 22% and an adopted brother "only" in 11% of cases.

Bailey JM & Pillard RC, Department of Psychology, Northwestern UniversityHomosexual male probands with monozygotic cotwins, dizygotic cotwins, or adoptive brothers were recruited using homophile publications. Sexual orientation of relatives was assessed either by asking relatives directly, or when this was impossible, asking the probands. Of the relatives whose sexual orientation could be rated, 52% (29/56) of monozygotic cotwins, 22% (12/54) of dizygotic cotwins, and 11% (6/57) of adoptive brothers were homosexual. Heritabilities were substantial under a wide range of assumptions about the population base rate of homosexuality and ascertainment bias. However, the rate of homosexuality among nontwin biological siblings, as reported by probands, 9.2% (13/142), was significantly lower than would be predicted by a simple genetic hypothesis and other published reports. A proband's self-reported history of childhood gender non-conformity did not predict homosexuality in relatives in any of the three subsamples. Thus, childhood gender nonconformity does not appear to be an indicator of genetic loading for homosexuality. Cotwins from concordant monozygotic pairs were very similar for childhood gender nonconformity.

Well, that puts you in the same boat as my sister. I was born before we came to A^2.

Now what would be really freaky is if you left town the day she was born....

I doubt it. I left there in 1978. And the last time I was back for a reunion of the Daily was 1990.

Well runintheCity !!!! I counted 34 oldest of siblings out of 120 responses, there's a lot of us oldest of boys only family. This is really interesting, I didn't count for sure but the balance seems pretty evenly split between middle children and youngest. What do you make of this?

Complexity saidMy family is politically correct. My brother (the oldest) is straight, my sister (the middle) is bisexual, I'm the youngest and gay. So we cover the entire spectrum.

I make nothing of it as yet.
I'm as scientific as salt over your shoulder!
I'd also imagine we need more data. But I find it fascinating nonetheless.

i have an older sister.
which makes me the oldest male.
I have three younger brothers. i know one of them is bi, but the youngest two i have no idea. Shrug. They will tell me eventually I guess. I also have a younger sister.

does this study factor in unsuccessful pregnancies?
My mom was pregnant two other times before me, but both failed...

I'm the youngest. I'm 6 years younger than my sister and a year and a haft younger than my brother. I'm the only one in my entire family that's not straight. Does me being bi help the situation with my family any better? lol

2nd of 6. All my siblings, like my parents, are asexual. I don't know how they're having kids, but I just can't imagine any of them having sex. Blech!

I've counted all the people who declared themselves and I've counted the men mentioned - such as the guy I met for coffee and a couple of posters' partners.

The tally so far:

Oldest - 42
Youngest - 40
Middle - 16
Other birth order placement - 11

So....

Anyone else?
